Description

“Hunchback Yei-be-Chai” Navajo Sandpainting — Rosabelle Ben, 1985, Framed

This original Navajo sandpainting, titled “Hunchback Yei-be-Chai” and signed by Rosabelle Ben in 1985, features the ceremonial figure Ghanaskidi—the Hunchback Yei—revered in Navajo tradition as a rain-bringer and guardian of healing. Rosabelle Ben, a respected Navajo artist from Shiprock, New Mexico, is known for her ceremonial sandpaintings, which are beautiful, well placed, and popular worldwide.

The composition showcases the Yei figure surrounded by sacred feathers, plants, and spirit motifs, executed with natural earth-tone sands accented by black, white, rust, and turquoise. This ceremonial image is part of the Nightway healing ritual, one of the most sacred rites in Navajo culture. The meticulous technique and symbolic accuracy reflect Rosabelle Ben’s skill and cultural grounding in traditional Navajo sandpainting.

Condition:
Excellent condition with no visible damage or loss. The sand surface remains intact and crisp, and the oak frame is sturdy and unmarred. The inscription on the back in pen is faint but legible.

Dimensions:
Overall: 16 x 16 inches
Visible image area: 11½ x 11½ inches
