Hand-Carved Virgin of Guadalupe Statue — Milagros, Santino Style, 18"
This hand-carved and painted wooden statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe is a powerful expression of Southwestern devotional folk art. Richly adorned with dozens of affixed metal milagros—including hearts, arms, legs, and floral motifs—the piece is deeply rooted in the ex-voto tradition of Latin American spirituality.
The figure’s gentle facial expression, elongated form, and prayerful pose strongly echo the style of Ronald “Santino” Kowalski, a noted folk artist from Deming, New Mexico. While unsigned and featuring embellishments not documented in Kowalski’s confirmed works, the sculpture’s aesthetic—its carving technique, color palette, and spiritual presence—is clearly aligned with the tradition he represents.
Standing 18 inches tall, the piece is executed with a careful hand and reverent attention to detail. The painted surface shows subtle age toning, and the integrated wooden base is fitted with felt pads for display.
Condition:
In excellent condition, with no visible damage or wear. The painted surfaces are vibrant, and all milagros are intact and firmly attached. Presents as like new.
