Description

Ocumicho Mexican Last Supper Sculpture — Folk Art Ceramic, 14" Large Format

A large, colorful ceramic Last Supper sculpture from Ocumicho, Michoacán, a region renowned for its surreal and expressive folk art pottery. This hand-formed tableau depicts thirteen animated figures gathered around a richly adorned table, set beneath sculpted arches featuring birds, flames, and symbolic elements inspired by the Tree of Life form. Each figure is uniquely modeled with the wide-eyed, whimsical expressions distinctive to Ocumicho artisans.

Vibrant glazes in red, blue, ochre, and pink dominate the palette, with hand-painted floral accents along the base. The artist's storytelling is apparent in every detail—from the bread and bowls on the table to the perched doves above—infusing the piece with both religious reverence and folkloric charm. This sculpture reflects the deep cultural narratives of rural Michoacán and stands as a striking devotional or display work.

An impressive example of Mexican folk ceramic tradition, ideal for collectors of religious, narrative, or regional Latin American art.

Condition:
In fair condition with stabilized age-related flaws. One bird’s beak is chipped, and a second bird has a visible but secure crack. A ~1" x ⅜" chip is missing on the right side of the base. Three 1½" long cracks are present along the upper arch, and two ~1" cracks appear on the seat area; all have been professionally stabilized. Despite these imperfections, the sculpture remains stable, solid, and structurally sound. The noted flaws are primarily noticeable only upon close inspection and do not detract from the overall visual impact when displayed.
