Ortega Barro Betus Church Sculpture – Hand-Painted Clay, 17.25"
This vibrant, hand-sculpted ceramic church sculpture is a striking example of barro betus folk art by the Ortega family of Metepec, Mexico. Standing at 17.25 inches tall, it features twin domes, arched windows, and two black crosses atop the spires. One dome is encircled by choir figures beneath an ornate red crown, while a seated couple with a basket of bread rests beneath the archway.
The piece showcases vivid hues—cobalt blue, red, green, pink, and yellow—enhanced by dynamic painted linework and expressive folk figures. Clearly signed “Ortega” on the rear, this sculpture exemplifies the whimsical, narrative-rich tradition of barro betus pottery, known for its bright colors and glossy finish achieved through a pine resin oil bath before firing.
An ideal display piece for collectors of Latin American folk art or vibrant religious-themed decor.
