Margaret Garcia Santa Clara Blackware Pot – Signed & Dated 1988
This hand-coiled and painted black-on-black pottery jar is a signed work by Margaret Garcia of the Santa Clara Pueblo, dated 1988. A classic example of Pueblo ceramic artistry, it features a matte-on-gloss geometric design encircling the vessel’s upper half.
Created using traditional methods, the pot exhibits the hallmark deep black finish achieved through reduction firing. Garcia's signature is etched on the underside along with the date, affirming both authenticity and provenance.
Margaret Garcia, a noted Santa Clara Pueblo potter, is recognized for her black-on-black jars, bowls, and engagement baskets. Her favorite designs include kiva steps and feathers in a row. She is cited in Gregory Schaaf's book Pueblo Indian Pottery: 750 Artist Biographies .
An excellent addition for collectors of Native American pottery or Southwestern art. Don't miss this opportunity to acquire a beautifully signed piece from a historic pottery tradition.
