Description

Horstmann Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword — Civil War Era, Philadelphia

This original U.S. Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword is a marked example from the esteemed outfitter W.H. Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia, active under this mark between 1859–1863, squarely within the American Civil War production period. These swords were privately purchased by Union officers—typically majors and above—and carried both as symbols of rank and functional sidearms.

The sword features a gilt brass guard with ornately cast eagle, shield, and sunburst motif, an emblem of patriotic pride. The leather-wrapped grip, bound with twisted brass wire, shows authentic service wear. A gently curved steel blade with a single fuller extends approximately 31 inches; remnants of etched patriotic motifs may still be present upon close inspection.

The sword retains its original steel scabbard, complete with gilt brass throat, mid-mount, and drag, and is fitted with leather suspension straps and a bullion officer’s sword knot, frayed but intact—an increasingly rare survival. The overall aesthetic and wear reflect honest age and possible battlefield service.

Swords of this type and condition are highly collectible and represent an iconic link to 19th-century U.S. military history. This piece would be a standout in any Civil War or militaria collection.

Condition

In fair condition overall, consistent with field use and age. Blade shows oxidation, pitting, and small edge chips. Leather grip is scuffed with wear to the binding, and the brass guard exhibits patina and minor deformation. Scabbard shows surface rust and spotting. Sword knot and leather straps are frayed but remain present. No structural breaks; the blade fits securely in the scabbard with typical age-related looseness. A solid, honest example of Civil War-era equipment.
