Description

WWII Japanese Type 98 Officer's Sword — Steel Locking Saya, Serial #16343

This is an original WWII-era Japanese Type 98 Shin-Guntō officer’s sword, issued during the height of Imperial Japan’s military expansion. Introduced in 1938 to replace the earlier Type 94, the Type 98 was both a weapon and a status symbol, modeled after traditional samurai swords but built for modern warfare.

This example features a traditionally styled hilt with ray skin (samegawa) under black ito wrap, accented by brass floral menuki. The brass tsuba (guard) and copper habaki show distinct arsenal inspection stamps, confirming its military production. The machine-made blade measures 26.25 inches and bears serial number 16343, likely corresponding to production at the Nagoya or Tokyo arsenal. The blade shows a visible hamon and retains functional edge integrity despite field use.

Housed in an original olive-drab painted steel saya (scabbard) with locking mechanism intact, the full length with scabbard is 38 inches; the sword alone measures 36.25 inches. The scabbard exhibits oxidation and honest wear at the tip, consistent with military field conditions. The overall form and fittings are consistent with mid-war production, reflecting a balance of quality craftsmanship and wartime utility.

A compelling piece of military history, this sword would make an excellent addition to any WWII, militaria, or edged weapons collection.

Condition:

In good condition overall, showing honest wartime wear. The blade has surface pitting and a few minor edge chips. The steel scabbard shows oxidation, particularly at the tip, and scattered loss to the olive-drab finish. The hilt wrapping remains intact with some wear-through exposing the ray skin below. The locking mechanism is fully functional and fittings are secure.
