F. Armstrong No. 1 Pipe Vise — Pat’d Dec 12, 1882, Bridgeport CT
An antique F. Armstrong No. 1 pipe vise, patented on December 12, 1882, and manufactured in Bridgeport, Connecticut. This heavy-duty tool features a cast iron frame, prominent screw clamp, and an integrated lever mechanism, designed to hold pipes securely for cutting or threading. The front bears the raised stamp “F. Armstrong Bridgeport CT,” along with “No. 1” and the patent date clearly marked on the side lever. This model is associated with U.S. Patent No. 269,141, originally granted to N.W. Vandegrift and assigned to Armstrong, a known innovator in industrial hardware. Compact yet substantial, this vise is a striking relic of 19th-century American manufacturing. Whether used as a functional workshop tool or as a display piece, it remains a desirable find for collectors of antique tools or industrial décor.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear and patina consistent with age. Surface oxidation is present on the screw threads and handle ends, but the structure is sound and fully intact. The screw and clamp mechanisms operate smoothly. Cast lettering is clear and legible throughout.
