Description

U.S. Model 1917 Remington Bayonet – 17" Blade, GF-Marked Leather Scabbard

This is a U.S. Model 1917 bayonet manufactured by Remington in October 1917, complete with its original leather scabbard. The M1917 bayonet was designed for the U.S. M1917 Enfield rifle and later saw extended use with various trench shotguns during both World Wars and beyond.

The 17-inch steel blade features a single fuller and is marked on the ricasso with "1917" over "Remington" in a circle, and "U.S." on the opposite side. The walnut grips are secured with two screws and exhibit the distinctive double-groove pattern, a design element carried over from the British Pattern 1913 bayonet to prevent confusion with other models.

The accompanying leather scabbard is marked "GF," indicating manufacture by the General Fireproofing Company, a known producer of M1917 scabbards during this period. The scabbard features a leather body with metal throat and tip, and includes the M1910-style belt hook attachment, reflecting the U.S. adaptation from the original British design .

This bayonet and scabbard set represents a significant piece of U.S. military history and would be a valuable addition to any militaria collection.

Condition

In good condition overall, with wear consistent with age and service. The blade shows light surface scuffing and minor oxidation. The wooden grips are intact and secure, displaying typical handling wear. The leather scabbard exhibits age-appropriate wear, with some surface scuffs and patina on the metal fittings. All components remain functional, and markings are clearly legible.
