Description

WWI British Pattern 1907 Bayonet by Wilkinson — Dated 1912, with Leather Scabbard

This original British Pattern 1907 bayonet, manufactured by the prestigious Wilkinson Sword Company, dates to December 1912, as indicated by the crown-over-"12" inspection stamp on the ricasso. Designed for use with the iconic Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) rifle, the P1907 was a standard-issue bayonet for British and Commonwealth troops throughout World War I and into World War II.

The 17-inch steel blade features a long single fuller and bears sharp period markings: “1907,” a British crown, and “Wilkinson,” signifying the renowned London-based maker. The reverse ricasso shows inspection and unit marks, including “35 W,” “E E,” and “VL23,” which likely denote regiment or rack numbers—an important trace of this weapon’s military service.

Its hilt is constructed with dark wood grip panels secured by two large screw bolts, fitted to a full tang with a steel pommel and functional spring catch for rifle mounting. The bayonet is paired with its original leather scabbard, fitted with a metal chape and throat—both intact and secure.

This is a robust and collectible edged weapon that represents a key era in 20th-century military history, ideal for display, reenactment, or historical study.

Condition

In good condition, with wear consistent with age and historical use. Blade shows scattered surface oxidation and marks but retains its original profile. The wooden grips are solid and well-secured, with some wear and light handling dents. The pommel and guard display patina from service life. The original leather scabbard is well-preserved with light scuffing and minor oxidation to the metal fittings. Please see photos for detailed condition views.
