Description

Wild Heerbrugg T1A Theodolite – 1962 Swiss Model w/ Dome Case & Pyramid Box

A finely engineered Wild Heerbrugg T1A theodolite, serial no. 77826, manufactured in Switzerland circa 1962. This precision optical instrument includes its original domed steel case with leather strap and a rare pyramid-shaped wooden transport box with padded, clean interior and stenciled shipping labels. The T1A is a standout example of Cold War-era surveying technology used by both NATO military units and civilian geodetic services during the mid-20th century.

Noted for its automatic vertical compensator (a novel feature at the time), the T1A simplified vertical angle leveling. Built as a double-center theodolite, it enabled high-precision angle repetition, ideal for tunnel traverses, cadastral work, and general engineering surveys. Its olive-drab enamel finish, all-metal construction, and Swiss optics make it a highly functional and visually compelling piece of technical design.

The instrument is clearly marked “Wild Heerbrugg Switzerland T1A – 77826”, and the set appears fully functional, with all optical components intact and controls operating smoothly. This complete offering is particularly desirable due to its original two-case transport system, often lost or separated over time.

Condition

Good condition overall, with visible paint wear, scuffing, and minor indentations consistent with age and use. Optics are clear. Dome case shows paint loss; leather strap is original and heavily worn. The wooden box interior is excellent—solid, clean, and well-padded. No additional accessories are included beyond what is shown.

Dimensions

  • T1A Instrument: 9.75" H x 6" W x 5.5" D
  • Steel Dome Case: 12.5" H x 6" Diameter
  • Wood Box: 18.5" H x 14.75" W x 14.75" D

A complete and collectible example of Wild Heerbrugg's historic T1A—an early 1960s precision theodolite with exceptional optics and Cold War-era engineering pedigree. A rare find with both cases included.
