Scottish Cheltenham Trunk by G.G. Peterkin — Club Latch, Original Interior
A rare and authentic flat-top Cheltenham-style travel trunk by G.G. Peterkin of Aberdeen, a respected 19th-century Scottish maker known for finely crafted military and civilian luggage. This example shares the distinctive club-marked latches and lock seen on other documented Peterkin trunks, helping affirm its origin and period, likely circa 1880–1900.
The trunk features a solid wood body clad in canvas, with hardwood slats and steel banding for reinforcement. Its original removable tray and floral paper lining remain intact, albeit heavily worn, aligning with known Peterkin design traits. The lock plate and all five latch mechanisms are stamped with a ♣ (club) symbol—a rare and identifying hardware motif.
This trunk is entirely unrestored, showing honest old wear that speaks to its long life and original utility. A compelling piece for collectors, decorators, or anyone seeking a genuine slice of Victorian-era craftsmanship.
Condition:
In fair, unrestored condition with honest old wear throughout. Canvas shows staining, losses, and paint splatter to the top. Interior floral lining is heavily worn with tears and signs of old water damage. One leather handle is missing; the other is fragile. Club-marked hardware is complete but no key is included. Structurally stable and ready for display as-is, with excellent patina.
