Description

1952 Holton Collegiate Bb Clarinet w/ Case — Elkhorn, WI, 26.5"

Offered here is a 1952 Holton “Collegiate” Bb clarinet, crafted by Frank Holton & Co. in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. This vintage woodwind instrument was part of Holton’s respected Collegiate line, designed for student and intermediate players, and remains a durable and collectible piece of American band history.

Stamped clearly on the upper joint as “Collegiate – Frank Holton & Co – Elkhorn Wis,” the clarinet features a dark Bakelite or ebonite body with silver-toned nickel-plated keywork. The mouthpiece is marked “Image by Bari,” a modern upgrade, while the cover is stamped “France,” indicating a likely European replacement part. Serial number 241841 dates the instrument’s manufacture to approximately 1952.

The instrument includes its original hard-sided Collegiate-branded case, lined in blue velvet. Though worn, it closes securely and continues to protect the clarinet components.

A solid example from a well-regarded U.S. maker, this clarinet is ideal for collectors, students, or musicians seeking a vintage horn with character and craftsmanship.

Condition

In good vintage condition overall. Surface wear, light tarnish, and finish loss are visible on the body and keywork. Pads and corks show signs of age. The clarinet has not been polished and is sold as found. Case shows heavy exterior wear and residue from old labels, but latches function properly.
