BR(M) Copper Railway Wall Lantern – Dual Eclipse Burners by Sherwoods
This is a substantial and rare British Railways (Midland Region) copper wall lantern, featuring dual original “Eclipse Burner – English Make – Sherwoods” oil burner units. Officially stamped “BR(M)” on the front chimney hood and inner reflector, this piece was originally manufactured for Midland Region rail stations and facilities, later professionally electrified for safe modern use.
Constructed from solid copper with riveted joints and original glass panes on three sides, the lantern retains its mirrored backplate to maximize light output. Inside, two black-painted cast burner bases (also marked BR(M)) house decorative candle-style bulbs with brass collars, simulating the historic look of oil lamps.
Sherwoods of Birmingham, known for high-quality brassware and railway equipment, supplied burners widely across British rail networks in the early 20th century. This lantern likely dates from the mid-20th century and represents a beautiful intersection of industrial function and period craftsmanship.
Perfect as a statement piece for collectors of railwayana, heritage decorators, or vintage lighting enthusiasts.
Condition
Good vintage condition overall, with age-appropriate wear and rich patina to the copper. Fully functional and tested electrical components have been integrated discreetly. No broken glass or structural damage noted; minor verdigris present near seams. See photos for details.
