Description

W. & L.E. Gurley Brass Transit Compass – Troy, NY – Circa 1880s

This antique brass transit compass, crafted by W. & L.E. Gurley of Troy, New York, dates to the 1880s. The compass face is engraved with the maker's name and the iconic fleur-de-lis marking north. The instrument features straight "A"-frame standards, flathead screws, and a leveling base with spring-opposed tangent screws—design elements characteristic of Gurley instruments from this era.

The compass dial is clear and legible, and the instrument includes dual sighting vanes and leveling vials. A stamped "6" is present on the underside, likely indicating an assembly or part number.

Condition:
Good condition overall, with age-appropriate wear and an authentic patina. One spirit level glass is cracked, and there are minor scuffs and oxidation consistent with its age. The compass face remains clear and legible, with components appearing intact and historically original.
