Chinese Carved Elmwood Secretary Desk – Dragon Columns, Drop Front, 43"
This beautifully hand-carved Chinese secretary desk is crafted from solid elmwood and features nine detailed figural panels across its surfaces. Rich scenes of scholars, attendants, and landscapes unfold across the drop-front, doors, and drawer faces, with the handles cleverly integrated into the carvings themselves—an elegant and thoughtful design element. Each side is framed by spiral columns adorned with coiled dragons and organic motifs, adding dimension and symbolism.
The slanted writing surface opens with a smooth drop-front action, automatically engaging side-mounted supports. Inside, the removable cubby insert remains intact, offering practical compartmentalization for papers or writing tools. Two dovetailed drawers and dual lower cabinet doors provide additional storage. The entire piece rests on carved claw-and-face feet, echoing classical Chinese form.
Condition
In good to excellent vintage condition with minor surface scuffs and scratches from age and handling. Some light separation at joints or carved panels due to natural wood movement over time. All compartments and mechanisms function properly.
