Pair of Graetzin Enamel Gas Heaters – Germany, c. 1905
A pair of early 20th-century enamel gas heaters by Graetzin, a division of the prominent German manufacturer Ehrich & Graetz. Each piece features a white enamel-finished metal body with gold accent bands, vented base, and an ornate domed brass lid with finely embossed foliate decoration—hallmarks of the Art Nouveau style. The design combines elegance and utility, characteristic of transitional industrial design from the turn of the century.
Both units are clearly marked: “GRAETZIN” on the front, with U.S. Patents dated Feb 28, 1905 and Sept 1, 1908 around the top rim. One is further stamped “GERMANY” under the lid; the other bears the internal marking “L” and is numbered “Gim 3131” underneath.
Originally designed as portable gas or alcohol-fueled heaters, these devices provided compact radiant heat in domestic, travel, or field settings before the advent of electric heating. The pierced design ensured proper ventilation, while the domed brass top helped reflect and radiate warmth. Their preserved form and striking silhouette make them valuable as decorative antiques or functional conversation pieces.
Condition
In good condition overall, with age-appropriate wear. Areas of surface rust, enamel loss, and finish wear are present throughout. The original finials are absent, and structural elements may be incomplete. All markings are legible, and the set is offered as shown.
