Pair of C.T. Ham No. 20 Railroad Inspector Lamps — Electrified
A rare matched pair of C.T. Ham Mfg. Co. No. 20 inspector’s lamps, originally designed for hands-on railroad work in the early 20th century. Manufactured in Rochester, NY, these heavy-duty reflector lamps were built for rail yard environments, providing essential illumination during nighttime inspections and maintenance.
Each lamp features a large ribbed metal reflector to project a concentrated beam of light—critical for checking couplers, brakes, and undercarriages. One includes an original Dietz “Fitzall” LOC-NOB marked globe, a standard introduced during the period following Dietz’s acquisition of C.T. Ham in 1915. The second globe is an unmarked replacement, visually consistent with period use.
These units have been electrified for display purposes. Both show visible wear from authentic use—oxidation, scuffs, scratches, and paint splatter—consistent with their age and industrial function.
Rooted in real-world railroad history, these lamps offer collectors and designers a rare opportunity to acquire functional lighting artifacts with a genuine past.
Condition
In good vintage condition overall, with surface wear, oxidation, scratches, and paint splatter consistent with age and use. One globe is original and marked; the other is a later replacement. Wiring appears intact but has not been tested and is configured for hardwired installation.
Dimensions
Each lamp measures approximately 18.5" H × 12" W × 9.5" D
