Description

Antique Primitive Household Tool Lot – Copper Kettle, Rug Beater, Washboards & Ice Hooks

This curated collection features four authentic early-to-mid 20th-century household tools, each reflecting the craftsmanship and utilitarian design of their era. Each piece in this lot not only served a practical purpose in its time but also offers a glimpse into the daily lives and domestic practices of the past:

  • Copper Kettle: A hand-hammered copper kettle marked "Made in Portugal," likely produced by manufacturers such as Tagus or ODI during the mid-20th century. These kettles were known for their durability and are now sought after for their rustic charm.
  • Iron Wire Rug Beater with Wood Handle: An essential cleaning tool before the advent of vacuum cleaners, this rug beater features a twisted wire design with a wooden handle. Such tools were commonly used to remove dust and dirt from rugs and carpets by hanging them outdoors and beating them vigorously.
  • Cast Iron Ice Hooks: These heavy-duty tongs were used in the 19th and early 20th centuries to transport large blocks of ice from delivery wagons to iceboxes in homes and businesses. The pointed jaws provided a secure grip on slippery ice blocks, making transportation more manageable.
  • National Washboard No. 29: The National Washboard Company, established in 1903, produced durable washboards used extensively before electric washing machines became commonplace. The No. 29 model, with its wooden frame, and the steel washboard represent the evolution of laundry tools in American households.

Condition:
Good overall vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The copper kettle exhibits denting and surface oxidation. The rug beater and ice hooks show finish wear and rust. Both washboards display signs of use, including wood wear and surface patina. All items retain their structural integrity and display well with authentic aged character.

Dimensions:

  • Kettle: 8" H x 8.5" W x 7" D
  • Rug Beater: 32" L x 9.5" W
  • Ice Hook: 15" L
  • Washboard (National No. 29): 12" H x 12.5" W x 1.5" D
