Labaree’s Vet Medicines Cabinet — c.1880s Apothecary Display, Original Glass
A rare and compelling piece of veterinary and advertising history, this late 19th-century wall cabinet is boldly marked “LABAREE’S VET. MEDICINES.” across the front door in hand-painted lettering. Retaining its original wavy glass, the cabinet likely originated as a branded display unit used in rural general stores or veterinary offices to promote and store animal health remedies.
Produced by Labaree’s Veterinary Medicines of Bellows Falls, Vermont, this cabinet would have housed items like liniments, mange cures, and tonics—often distributed in embossed glass bottles or free sample vials. These cabinets were typically part of point-of-sale advertising strategies in the veterinary supply trade around 1880–1910, and few survive in this condition today.
Condition
In fair to good condition for its age. The original glass is intact, and the cabinet is structurally sound. There is notable finish wear and scattered edge chipping throughout, including a 1¾" loss at one corner, and a section of the back panel is loose. The key is missing. Paint loss to the lettering is visible but legible. Overall, an honest, well-aged example with authentic period patina.
