Humphreys' Witch Hazel Oil Reverse-Painted Advertising Mirror – Beveled Glass
A survivor from the late 19th or very early 20th century, this reverse-painted advertising mirror promotes Humphreys' Witch Hazel Oil, a remedy once touted for everything from bruises to burns—and, yes, even piles. Featuring beveled glass and a solid oak frame, the mirror’s centerpiece is a graceful allegorical figure in flowing pink robes, holding a laurel branch and marked “TRADE MARK.”
Below, just peeking above the bottom edge of the frame, is the classic sales pitch:
“The Pile Ointment – Trial Size 25 Cts.”
A reminder that in a more genteel age, even one’s most uncomfortable ailments were treated with elegance—and a touch of silvered glass.
Dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, this mirror exemplifies the period's fusion of marketing, medicine, and decorative arts. It makes a compelling addition to collections of early American advertising, apothecary wares, or framed glasswork.
Condition
In good condition overall, with age-appropriate wear. The reflective surface shows scattered loss and patina, especially in the upper mirror field. Some joint separation is visible in the frame corners, and the reverse wood panel has wear consistent with age. The beveled glass remains intact, and the painted imagery is still vibrant and legible. Offered as shown.
