Anna Milton 'Angel with Dove' – 1995 Signed Mixed Media, Framed
A serene and symbol-rich mixed media work by Welsh-Canadian artist Anna Milton, created in 1995 and signed at the bottom center. This piece portrays an angelic figure with golden hair, violet eyes, and a richly patterned robe adorned with silver stars. A white dove rests gently against the figure's chest, reinforcing the spiritual tone. The background features a deep indigo sky dotted with stars, enhancing the celestial ambiance.
Executed in Milton’s signature style, the artwork combines rice paper collage with watercolour, acrylics, and gouache, resulting in a layered, textured surface. The piece is presented in an ornate carved wood and plaster gilt frame with glass, complementing its ethereal subject matter. The original (1995) price of $250 is noted on the verso.
About the Artist: Anna Milton
Anna Milton is a Welsh-born, Canadian-based artist celebrated for her richly layered mixed media works that intertwine symbolic narratives with vibrant color palettes. Born in Swansea, Wales, she earned her BA Honours from Cardiff College of Art before immigrating to Canada in 1977. Initially settling in Alberta, she later established her artistic career in Vancouver and currently resides in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.
Milton's artistic process involves creating drawings on rice or Japanese papers, which she lifts from inked plates and collages onto canvas. She then enhances these compositions with watercolours, acrylics, and gouache, often incorporating maps to reflect the significance of place in her work.
Beyond her personal practice, Milton has contributed significantly to the community as an art therapist in North Vancouver, facilitating sessions for diverse groups including children, trauma victims, and the elderly. She co-founded the Miramar Arts Society, promoting integrated arts programs, and led community projects like “A Stitch in Time,” a collaborative textile installation now displayed at the John Braithwaite Community Centre.
Milton's work has been exhibited internationally, with shows in Canada, the UK, and other countries, reflecting her enduring commitment to exploring themes of identity, memory, and spirituality through art.
