Victorian Mahogany Commode Cabinet – J. Ridgway Bates & Co. Basin
A late 19th-century Victorian washstand commode featuring a ceramic basin marked “J. Ridgway Bates & Co.”, an English pottery maker active around 1870–1890 known for durable sanitary ware. Crafted from solid mahogany, this piece includes a lift-top lid, paneled front door, and ceramic knob, all mounted on original wood casters (one chipped).
Functioning as both a washstand and night commode, it would have been used in bedrooms or dressing areas before indoor plumbing. Clean water was brought by pitcher and poured into the basin for washing; waste water was then removed manually. The lower compartment likely housed a chamber pot or slop jar.
This is an evocative artifact of Victorian domestic life, showcasing both refined craftsmanship and historical utility. A handsome, functional addition for antique collectors or interior decorators.
Condition
In good antique condition, with honest wear consistent with age. The mahogany finish shows scuffing, scratches, and areas of surface wear. The lid is warped, a left side trim section is missing, and one wood caster is chipped. The ceramic basin exhibits crazing, and all hardware appears original. Please review photos for full details.
