Description

19th C. Ottoman Copper Ewer — Hand-Hammered, 13” Tall, 5.5 lbs

A 19th-century Ottoman metalwork, this antique hand-hammered copper ewer showcases the utilitarian craftsmanship of the Middle Eastern region—likely Turkey or Persia during the late Ottoman era. Traditionally used for water or ablutions, the vessel features a bold, tapered silhouette with a flared neck and wide conical base, designed for stability and daily function.

Made entirely of copper, the piece bears a deeply worn but visually rich patina, with hand-tool marks and visible soldering seams characteristic of rural, artisanal production. A curved strap handle, attached with rivets, adds both utility and sculptural appeal. These ewers were often tinned on the interior to protect contents from copper corrosion, a practice common across the Islamic world in domestic metalwork.

Highly collectible, this vessel speaks to the daily rhythms of 19th-century life in the Ottoman Empire. Whether displayed in a curated collection or used as a dramatic rustic accent, it offers strong decorative and cultural presence.

Condition

In good vintage condition, with significant patina and surface wear consistent with age and functional use. Darkened oxidation is visible along seams and at the mouth; some light dents and irregularities are present, typical of handmade utilitarian items. Structurally sound and stable, with no cracks or breaks.
