Pair of Vintage Olinalá Lacquer Boxes — Hand-Painted Guerrero Folk Art Scenes
This pair of hand-carved and hand-painted wooden boxes reflects the rich lacquerware traditions of Mexican folk art, likely originating from Olinalá, Guerrero. Decorated with panoramic countryside scenes of cottages, rolling hills, palm trees, and floral flourishes, these boxes are coated in a high-contrast black lacquer finish with vibrant pigments applied in a stylized, expressive brushstroke technique. The boxes are rectangular and hinged, with natural wood interiors. Their naïve, landscape-driven designs capture the cultural nostalgia and storytelling common in mid-20th century Mexican decorative work.
Condition
Good condition with visible wear from use and age. Finish wear, paint loss, and minor chips are present throughout, particularly along edges. Hinges are intact and boxes open and close properly. Patina consistent with folk-painted vintage items.
