This traditional blackware pottery jar is crafted by Robert A. Aguilar, a potter from the Santo Domingo Pueblo (Kewa), New Mexico. Signed on the base, the piece is hand-coiled and hand-painted, featuring a bold geometric motif in matte black against a polished dark brown-black surface.
Aguilar, born in 1968, is part of a renowned pottery family and has been actively creating pottery since the 1970s, following traditional methods passed down through generations. His work reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Santo Domingo Pueblo, utilizing natural clays, mineral paints, and pit firing techniques .
This jar, measuring approximately 7 inches in height and 12 inches in both width and depth, exemplifies the classic low-shouldered, wide-mouth form characteristic of Santo Domingo pottery.
