Navajo Sandpainting “Central Stalk of Corn” – Signed Verso, 14.5"
This is an authentic Navajo sandpainting featuring the ceremonial theme known as “The Central Stalk of Corn”, identified in handwritten text on the verso. The image is framed in natural wood (no glass) and showcases two Yei figures flanking a central corn stalk—an important symbol of sustenance and life in Navajo culture. A protective spirit figure encircles the composition, rendered in fine colored sand.
Executed in the traditional dry pigment method, the design reflects spiritual and agricultural balance. The verso inscription reads:
“The Navajo sandpainting. This one is the Nayenezgani, The Central Stalk of Corn”
It is also signed “Louise E.”, suggesting possible attribution to a Native artist.
A compelling and spiritually resonant artwork, this piece blends sacred symbolism with intricate craftsmanship, making it an excellent addition to any Native American or Southwestern art collection.
Condition
Good condition overall. Some wear is present, particularly on the verso panel, consistent with age. The sandpainting itself is intact and stable, with vivid colors and no apparent losses. No glass was used in this piece by design.
