Modern Toys “New Silver Mountain” Tin Train – T. Saitoh 1969, Japan
A fantastic example of vintage Japanese tin lithography, this battery-operated “New Silver Mountain” No. 4230 toy train was manufactured by Modern Toys (Masudaya) and designed by T. Saitoh in 1969. Richly decorated with bold red, blue, and metallic silver detailing, it features intricate printed graphics throughout—including stylized wheels, boiler lines, rivets, and control panels.
A standout detail is the raised plastic engineer figure wearing a red cap, stationed in a colorful cockpit with lithographed dashboard graphics. The toy is marked “T. Saitoh 1969” on the back panel and includes several patent numbers along with the Modern Toys logo, both behind the driver and on the underside.
The text “NEW SILVER MOUNTAIN” and engine number 4230 are emblazoned on the sides, making this piece visually striking from any angle. The underside houses the original on/off switch, battery contacts (uses UM-1 cells), and a friction drive wheel mechanism—though the battery compartment cover is missing and the unit is untested.
An excellent display piece and a nostalgic addition to any mid-century tin toy collection.
