Pair of Metal Zia Wall Plaques
A pair of handcrafted metal wall plaques, each celebrating iconic symbols of New Mexico’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
The first plaque features the Zia sun symbol, marked "Mexico" verso. The Zia symbol—originating from the Zia Pueblo—represents the sacred number four: the four cardinal directions, the four seasons, the four times of day, and the four stages of life. The central circle symbolizes the continuity of life itself. Adopted onto New Mexico’s state flag in 1925, the Zia symbol honors the state's Indigenous legacy.
The second plaque is signed verso by a Las Cruces artist, incorporates the Zia design with three crosses at its center. The three crosses are deeply significant to Las Cruces ("The Crosses" in Spanish), a city named for memorial crosses erected along El Camino Real after attacks on early travelers. Today, they remain a powerful emblem of the region’s Native American, Spanish, and frontier history.
Both plaques feature textured, aged metal finishes: the Zia plaque displays a warm, rustic patina, while the Zia with Crosses piece highlights a dramatic verdigris finish on the crosses.
