Description

L.C. Groves 1990 Organ Mountains Rio Grande Scene — Signed, Framed

This signed 1990 photographic print by L.C. Groves captures the Organ Mountains as seen across a winding stretch of the Rio Grande at dusk. Known for his evocative imagery of the Southwest, Groves masterfully portrays the serene meeting of land, sky, and water in soft purples and cool twilight blues. His work is distinguished by its calm energy and strong sense of place, and this scene—featuring distant city lights under a cloud-dappled sky—is no exception.

The piece is professionally framed under glass in a carved reddish-brown wood frame with deep burgundy matting. Signed and dated “L.C. Groves © 1990” in the lower right, this atmospheric image is a strong representation of the artist’s celebrated regional style.

Condition:
In fair condition overall. The frame shows moderate wear with visible scuffing along the edges. There is some UV fading to the print, and a small amount of debris is present behind the glass. The piece remains intact and displayable but would benefit from cleaning or potential re-matting for optimal presentation.

Size:
Overall: 17.25" X 21.25"
Visible: 8.5" X 11"

About the Artist: L.C. Groves (1919–1995)
L.C. Groves was a renowned Southwestern photographer based in southern New Mexico, celebrated for his vivid and contemplative depictions of desert landscapes. A graduate of New Mexico State University and trained in photography at the University of New Mexico, Groves developed a style that emphasized natural light, expansive composition, and the quiet majesty of the arid American Southwest. His work frequently featured the Organ Mountains, the Mesilla Valley, and scenes along the Rio Grande, capturing both the geological drama and the serene stillness of the region.
Groves exhibited widely throughout New Mexico, with many of his pieces shown and sold through his own gallery in historic Old Mesilla. His signed works from the 1980s and 1990s remain sought after for their regional authenticity and artistic clarity, particularly among collectors of Western and landscape photography.
