This distinctive hand-painted and carved gourd vase is the work of Sylvia Hendrickson, a renowned gourd artist based in Las Cruces, New Mexico. After moving to Las Cruces in 2007, Hendrickson discovered buffalo gourds in the desert, sparking her passion for gourd art. She employs techniques such as carving, wood burning, and painting, often incorporating natural materials like beads, feathers, and leather into her pieces .
The vase features a rich, mottled pattern in greens, oranges, and browns, evoking natural textures and seasonal tones. A dark green carved ribbon wraps around the piece, inset with circular medallions displaying dragonflies and stylized figures in earthy hues. The organic, asymmetrical form and glossy lacquered finish make it a striking decorative piece.
