"Best Friend" (#3) Hand-Sculpted Clay Sculpture of Young Girl & her Best Friend, View Watchlist >
by Martha Wilcox
Just a few years ago, avid artist and friend and part-time Cloudcroft dweller Martha Wilcox donated the last few of her small sculpture entitled "Best Friend" of a young girl and her kitty to us, and she asked that the proceeds assist 1CaT. Standing ~4.25" tall, Martha's sculpture of a young girl and her feline best friend sells for $25. Sadly, the sculptures in this auction are the last three “Best Friend” sculptures that we have available. Unfortunately, this sculpture, “Best Friend” #3, has a few small chips in the finish. See the other photos to see details of small chips that are on this particular sculpture. Thank you, Martha, for your kindness and generosity to our kitties — we love and appreciate you!
About the Artist:
Martha Wilcox, Spring, TX & Cloudcroft, NM
Artist Martha Wilcox, a part-time Cloudcroft resident, first entered OTBP shortly after we opened in 1996, and has been a kind supporter since then. For most of her life, she has been an avid artist, working in all sorts of different mediums, especially clay and painting. Martha states, “When artists write or talk about their work, there is great similarity in the comments made. We mention the need to communicate, and the desire to express our thoughts and feelings about life and death, joy and sadness, hope and despair, and many other shared human experiences. I think most of us realize how fortunate we are, as artists, to have found a specific and very personal way to accomplish this.
“I like to think that [my] pieces convey the quiet yet intense feelings I have for the simplicity and directness of clay. The medium, by its very nature, allows me a tactile, physical involvement with each work I create, and therefore a very intimate connection to them. Sculpting affords me the opportunity to make my own personal statement and to reach … touch … and, hopefully connect.” Martha has been sculpting clay for many years, but unfortunately, she has been having issues with her sight, so has been unable to sculpt for a while. Her artwork is in private collections throughout the US, including that of former President Gerald Ford.
