Description

Macey Oak Barrister Bookcase – Original Glass, 3-Section, Circa 1910

An exceptional example of early 20th-century craftsmanship, this Macey barrister bookcase, made circa 1910, is a standout piece from the golden era of American furniture design. Manufactured in Grand Rapids, Michigan, by the Macey Company—one of the premier makers of modular legal bookcases—this pre-merger model reflects both practical innovation and timeless style.

Crafted with a solid oak frame and veneered side and back panels, the bookcase separates into five pieces (three stackable sections, a base, and a top). Each section features its original glass door, which lifts and retracts smoothly into the case via a geared track mechanism—an innovation Macey helped pioneer. The shelving units vary in height (one 10" and two 13¾"), ideal for accommodating different book sizes or collectibles.

These cases were originally marketed to attorneys, judges, and scholars, representing a mark of intellectual and professional prestige. Owning a Macey bookcase was not merely utilitarian—it signified refinement. Unlike mass-market alternatives produced after Macey’s 1930 merger with Globe-Wernicke, this piece remains a "purebred" pre-merger Macey, retaining its original materials, maker’s labels, and architectural integrity.

Today, Macey bookcases are sought not just for their modular function, but for their rich historical narrative. They tell the story of a time when form followed function with elegance, and when craftsmanship stood the test of generations.

Condition

In good condition with wear consistent with age. The piece shows scuffing and minor veneer bubbling, primarily on the back and isolated areas of the side panels. Structurally sturdy, with signs of prior restoration to ensure long-term stability. All doors function properly, and original glass is intact and clear—a rare and desirable feature.
