William Briggs Silverplate Salver – Rococo Engraved, 14", Sheffield c.1900
A beautifully detailed antique silverplate salver by William Briggs of Sheffield, crafted circa 1900 during the height of Edwardian decorative refinement. This piece showcases lavish Rococo Revival scrollwork, with finely chased floral and foliate engraving across the field and a bold scalloped rim adorned with shell and scroll accents.
The underside bears a clear set of factory marks: “Briggs Sheffield”, the “Patent” stamp, and the “WB” maker’s mark, confirming its origin. While styled to echo traditional sterling hallmarks, this is a high-quality silverplate piece rather than solid silver—typical of the period's fine electroplated wares.
William Briggs & Co. was a respected Sheffield-based maker active in the late 19th to early 20th century, known for producing decorative and durable silverplated items. Their work often featured intricate design and was retailed through prominent channels across the UK.
Condition:
Good vintage condition, showing honest signs of age and use. There is some wear to the silver finish, primarily on the raised areas, and darkened patina in the recessed detailing. The engraving remains crisp and well-preserved. We’ve chosen not to polish, leaving that decision to the buyer.
