19th-Century Painted Document Box — Dovetail, Wire Hinges, 14" Length
This charming 19th-century American document box showcases authentic hand-crafted construction with exposed dovetail joinery and its original twisted wire hinges. The surface features a timeworn black and ochre painted finish, richly patinated with years of handling and use. Compact and functional, this piece once likely served as a storage chest for letters, papers, or personal valuables.
The interior, left raw, shows signs of long-term use with age-related staining and period graffiti—most notably red pencil or crayon markings on the underside of the lid. These human touches lend an evocative glimpse into the box's lived history.
A wonderful display piece or rustic accent with historical appeal, ideal for collectors of early Americana, folk art, or primitive furnishings.
Condition
In good antique condition, with age-appropriate wear. Finish loss, scuffs, and paint chipping are present throughout, particularly on the edges and corners. The interior is stained and discolored, with writing/scribbles visible on the inside lid. Structurally solid, retaining original wire hinges and hand-cut dovetail joints.
