Antique Wood Firkin with Tin Bottom — 19th C., 15½" Tall with Handle
A rustic 19th-century wooden firkin, featuring classic staved construction with a swing handle and bentwood bands. This utilitarian piece includes its original circular lid and is distinguished by a tin-lined bottom—an early preservation method often used for storing butter, sugar, or lard. The warm patina, hand-cut nails, and simple joinery speak to early American craftsmanship, possibly Shaker or Shaker-inspired in style.
The bucket has aged beautifully, showing character through its natural wood grain and wear. The tin base is affixed with early nails and shows oxidation, adding to the authentic period charm. The removable lid fits loosely due to a large central split and one side no longer being secured.
This is a great display piece for rustic, farmhouse, or Americana-themed décor.
Condition
In fair condition with age-appropriate wear. The wood shows moderate surface wear, stains, and discoloration. The lid has a significant split down the center and is detached on one side due to missing nails. The tin base exhibits rust and oxidation, consistent with age and material. Please refer to photos for complete condition details.
