Antique 5-Gallon Red Wing Crock – Union Stoneware Co., Salt Glaze
This antique 5-gallon stoneware crock was produced by the Union Stoneware Company of Red Wing, Minnesota, active under that name from 1906 to the early 1930s. A classic example of early American utilitarian ware, it features the distinctive cobalt blue leaf motif beneath a stylized number “5,” all under a traditional salt glaze finish. The front also bears the oval maker's stamp reading: "Red Wing Union Stoneware Co., Red Wing, Minn."
Crafted with thick walls and a rounded rim, this substantial crock was built for everyday use and remains a desirable piece for collectors of early 20th-century Red Wing pottery. Its salt glaze provides a lightly textured, glossy surface that highlights the hand-applied decoration unique to this period.
This is a pre-Red Wing logo example, made before the red wing emblem came into use around 1909, making it a notable piece for historical collectors.
