Description

Antique Jersey Coffee Bin – Geo. Tanno, Niotaze KS, Slant-Lid Store Fixture c.1900

An exceptionally rare early 20th-century Jersey Coffee bin, attributed to George Tames—an original settler and general store owner in Niotaze, Kansas. Constructed of solid 1-inch pine boards with classic dovetail joinery, this slant-lid floor bin was likely used in Tames’ store, which also operated as the town’s post office. Retaining its original red paint and heavily weathered stenciled lettering, the front panel reads “Geo. Tames,” with traces of “Photographic Cards” and “Niotaze, Ks.”

Jersey Coffee bins were manufactured for bulk display of 100 lbs. of coffee, commonly supplied by Dayton Spice Mills Co., and became staples of rural general stores around the turn of the century. This example reflects that history while offering an added layer of provenance tied to a founding figure in a historic Kansas railway town.

A compelling artifact of frontier-era American commerce, perfect for primitive décor, historical retail settings, or folk art collections.

Condition:
Good antique condition with pronounced wear from age and use. Red paint is heavily faded and chipped; stenciled lettering is partially worn but legible in places. The wood shows surface marks, weathering, and discoloration throughout. Hinges are original and functional. More extensively worn than most surviving examples, enhancing its authentic rustic character.
