19th C. Child’s Painted Pine Sea Chest – 28", Worn Patina
Charming and compact, this 19th-century child’s-size painted pine sea chest displays authentic age and character. Finished in a now-faded green paint, the trunk features hand-cut nails, early construction techniques, and a flat iron lockplate front. Though the hinges are stamped "Baldwin"—a mid-20th century maker of replacement hardware—they are not original to the chest and suggest a later repair. The small scale and interior wear suggest it was likely used by or made for a child, possibly for travel or personal storage.
The chest shows significant surface wear and warping from past water exposure, with the underside recently reinforced. Interior lid bears graphite scribbles and remnants of paper lining, and original side handles are now missing.
A compelling decorative piece with rustic charm and historical appeal—ideal for vintage display or gentle storage use.
Condition:
Heavily worn with scuffing, fading, and extensive finish loss. Bottom has been reinforced but shows past warping and water damage. No handles or key remain. Hinges are later replacements (marked "Baldwin"). Structurally intact but not fully solid—best suited for display or light use.
Dimensions:
12 x 28 x 14.5 inches (Height x Width x Depth)
