Northern Plains Buffalo Horn Headdress, Beaded Brow Band and Long Horsehair Tail, ca. 1880–1920
A striking Northern Plains Native American buffalo horn headdress, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century (ca. 1880–1920), exhibiting powerful ceremonial form and traditional Plains construction. The headdress features naturally curved bison horns mounted to a fur-covered hide cap, framed by a beaded brow band worked in glass seed beads in stepped diamond and linear motifs, executed in red, white, and sky blue.
A dramatic 40-inch horsehair tail extends from the rear, reinforced internally with organic material to enhance weight and movement. The cap is constructed from hide, fur, and felt, with additional hand-stitched sinew reinforcements. This form of horned headdress, often associated with the Blackfoot, Crow, and Sioux nations, was typically reserved for warriors or spiritual leaders, signifying strength, vision, and deep ties to the sacred buffalo. Such regalia were used in dances, ceremonies, and rites of passage, and often passed down across generations.
Includes a separate cork stand for display (not affixed).
Dimensions: 11 x 56 x 18 in. (overall); Head diameter: 24 in.; Tail length: 40 in.
Provenance
Private American collection; likely acquired mid-20th century. No tribal affiliation assigned.
Condition
Good overall condition with wear consistent with age and ceremonial use. Tear present on verso of fur cap; minor bead loss and fraying at edges of brow band.
