L. Maurer “American Fireman” Lithographs – Always Ready & Conflict, Framed
Offered here is a compelling matched pair of original hand-colored lithographs by Louis Maurer, titled “The American Fireman – Always Ready” and “Running to the Conflict” (labeled verso), published by Currier & Ives in 1858. Part of a celebrated four-part series, these works honor the heroism of mid-19th-century American volunteer firemen. Maurer, a German-American artist, vividly captures the urgency and bravery of firefighters—one scene showing a fireman pulling a steam engine into action, the other pointing toward the blaze while raising the alarm.
Both lithographs are signed in the lower right and presented under glass in solid wood frames with gilt liners and custom matting. These iconic prints are excellent examples of early American lithography and remain sought-after for their bold visual style and historical relevance.
A rare opportunity to acquire two works from a culturally significant series, ideal for collectors of firefighting history or 19th-century Americana.
Condition:
Good overall. Prints display strong color, though there is some debris visible behind the glass. Frames show wear consistent with age, including joint separation, minor chips, scuffs, and loss of gilt finish. Please review images for full condition details.
