Donald Benally Navajo Koshare Carving – Two Clowns in 1903 Ford
A vibrant and humorous folk art sculpture by Navajo artist Donald Benally, this hand-carved scene titled "Two Clowns in 1903 Ford" features two expressive Koshare figures riding in a stylized early automobile. Known in Pueblo and Hopi cultures as sacred clowns or trickster figures, Koshares are symbols of balance through humor and inversion—often acting out exaggerated, taboo, or satirical behaviors in ceremonial and communal settings.
Rendered in carved wood with mixed media including leather, stone, synthetic hair, wire, feathers, and felt, the figures are adorned with bold body paint, wide grins, and striped patterns. One wears a feathered hat while the other may be missing its headpiece. The car is filled with carved fruit—watermelons, pumpkins, and gourds—while the desert-inspired base features natural stones and driftwood. The piece is hand-painted and signed by Benally, with the original title inscribed (partially crossed out) on the underside.
A compelling example of Native American folk expression blending traditional symbolism with contemporary humor.
