Delta Electric Railroad Lantern — Convex Glass, Original Ray-O-Vac Battery
This vintage railroad lantern was manufactured by the Delta Electric Company of Marion, Indiana—an early pioneer in battery-powered lighting devices. Likely dating from the 1930s–1940s, the lantern features its original convex glass lens and retains a period Ray-O-Vac No. 6 dry-cell battery. Constructed from pressed steel with a black-painted finish, it bears a stamped maker’s mark on the front panel. Its rugged build, battery compartment, and wiring suggest it was used in rail or industrial environments, where dependable portable lighting was essential.
Delta Electric was renowned for innovations in hand-held and industrial lighting. Their "Powerlite" series, which this example may represent, became especially popular for military and commercial use from the 1930s through the 1970s.
