Description

L.E. & B.G. Chace Somerset MA 4 Gal Stoneware Jug – Cobalt Floral

This is a 4-gallon salt-glazed stoneware jug marked L.E. & B.G. Chace, Somerset, with the impressed numeral “4” denoting capacity. Produced in Massachusetts between 1847 and 1882, this jug showcases the traditional ovoid form with a narrow neck, applied handle, and warm buff clay body. A hand-brushed cobalt floral motif adorns the front—typical of the decorative accents used by the Chace pottery during the mid-19th century.

Leonard E. and Benjamin G. Chace operated a respected pottery in Somerset, MA, known for robust utilitarian ware with appealing cobalt embellishments. Their marked pieces are considered scarce and are prized by collectors of Northeastern American stoneware. This example features rich salt glazing, firing irregularities, and strong regional character—an ideal addition to any folk pottery or Americana collection.

Condition
Good condition overall, with wear consistent with age. There are two tight hairline cracks, a 1-inch chip on the decorated face, and a ½-inch chip under the spout. Glaze skips, firing marks, and age-appropriate surface wear are also present, typical of 19th-century stoneware.
