E. Norton & Co Bennington VT 2 Gal Stoneware Jug – Cobalt Floral
This is a fine 2-gallon salt-glazed stoneware jug by E. Norton & Co., Bennington, Vermont, produced between 1881 and 1885. It bears the impressed maker's mark and “2” capacity stamp, along with a vivid hand-brushed cobalt floral motif—a hallmark of the Norton pottery tradition. The jug features a classic ovoid form with a narrow spout and sturdy applied handle, crafted in a warm tan clay body with high-gloss glaze.
The Norton family pottery business, established in 1785, was known for producing durable utilitarian wares with striking cobalt decoration. This piece exemplifies their late 19th-century craftsmanship, combining function and decorative appeal. The floral design remains well-defined, and the jug’s proportions and glazing are typical of high-quality Bennington stoneware from this period. A collectible and display-worthy example of American folk pottery.
Condition
Good overall, with age-appropriate wear. Minor surface marks, staining, and kiln-related imperfections are present, but no remarkable damage is noted. The handle is intact and the glaze retains its luster.
