L.W. Fenton Stoneware Jug – St. Johnsbury VT, Cobalt Decoration, 11.5"
This 19th-century salt-glazed stoneware jug bears the impressed mark “L.W. FENTON / ST. JOHNSBURY VT,” identifying it as a product of Leander W. Fenton’s pottery in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The jug features a bold hand-applied cobalt oxide decoration, likely a stylized tulip or floral motif, positioned just below the shoulder. This rich blue embellishment, achieved by painting cobalt slip onto the jug before firing, is a hallmark of 1800s American stoneware design.
Leander W. Fenton inherited the pottery from his father, Richard Webber Fenton, who established the business in 1808. After Richard’s passing in 1851, Leander operated the pottery until it was destroyed by fire in 1859. Today, surviving Fenton-marked pieces are appreciated for their craftsmanship, regional significance, and decorative charm.
Formed from buff-toned clay with an ovoid body, applied strap handle, and narrow spout, this jug is both functional and visually striking. A classic piece of New England folk pottery, ideal for display or serious stoneware collectors.
