J. Yazzie 1986 Native American Oil Painting – Signed w/ Buffalo Remarque, Framed
Anl original oil painting by Navajo artist Johnny Tso Yazzie (1945–2021), signed “J. Yazzie” with his iconic buffalo skull remarque and dated 1986. Executed in oil on stretched canvas, the composition captures a solemn procession of Native American figures trekking through a snowy expanse, watched over by two towering guardian spirits set against a moonlit, mountainous sky. Yazzie’s masterful use of color, scale, and symbolism creates a deeply spiritual and emotionally resonant scene.
This work is presented in a carved wood frame with a linen border, professionally backed and ready to hang. A collectible piece from Yazzie’s mature period, reflecting his deep ties to Navajo spirituality, tribal imagery, and the storytelling traditions his people.
Johnny Yazzie was a graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts and became a major figure in the rise of contemporary Native American painting. His works are exhibited across the U.S., including at the Heard Museum and the Institute of American Indian Arts, and are held in private and institutional collections nationwide.
