Apache Gaan Dancer Trio — Signed M. Zuni, Isleta NM Clay Figures w/ Tabletas
A striking set of three hand-formed Apache Gaan (Mountain Spirit) dancer figures, signed M. Zuni, attributed to Margie Zuni of Isleta Pueblo, New Mexico. Crafted from clay or ceramic and topped with vibrant hand-cut tin tabletas, each figure represents a ceremonial Gaan dancer—spiritual beings central to Apache traditions of healing, protection, and ritual performance.
Dressed in textured skirts and painted in black body paint with bold white markings, each figure wears a red floral bandana mask and holds two painted dance sticks. Their raised arms and stylized headdresses reflect the visual power of Gaan dancers as seen in Crown Dance ceremonies. The tin tabletas are particularly distinctive—an uncommon material in folk representations—adding dimensional flair to the sculptural forms.
These figures exemplify a blend of cultural symbolism and Southwest folk art, with Zuni’s work known for honoring ceremonial themes through expressive, handmade form. Likely dating from the mid-to-late 20th century, this signed trio offers both artistic value and ethnographic significance.
A meaningful addition for collectors of Native American art, Apache ceremonial representation, or Pueblo folk sculpture.
