Description

Hopi Chipmunk Kachina by Joe Lucero — Hand-Carved & Signed

This hand-carved Hopi Kachina doll by noted artisan Joe Lucero represents the Chipmunk Kachina, a whimsical yet symbolic figure in Hopi tradition. Crafted from a single piece of cottonwood root and painted by hand, the figure features a stylized chipmunk mask with upright ears, expressive eyes, and a bold red and turquoise facial stripe.

The figure is shown mid-dance, grasping two green dance wands, and wears traditional painted attire with etched details on the limbs and kilt. It stands atop a round base decorated in vibrant, angular Hopi motifs. The underside is signed “Hopi Joe Lucero” and inscribed “Chipmunk,” clearly attributing the work to the carver and naming the character.

An engaging example of Southwestern Native American folk art, this piece brings cultural depth and charm to any collection or display.
