Chinese Coromandel Lacquer Screen — 4 Panel, Carved, 72" Tall
A vintage 4-panel Chinese Coromandel lacquer floor screen, dating to the early to mid-20th century. Crafted using traditional lacquer carving techniques, it features finely hand-painted and incised decoration on both sides. One face depicts a detailed courtly scene with robed figures in a landscaped garden, while the reverse showcases the symbolic “Four Gentlemen” plants—orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom—representing virtues of the scholar-gentleman. Inlaid floral and bird panels decorate the base, all framed in ornate scrollwork. Brass-capped feet add a refined finish.
While the original hinges are absent, rendering the screen non-folding, each panel remains sturdy. This piece would make a stunning wall-mounted display or serve beautifully as a dramatic headboard.
Each panel: 72" H × 16" W × 1" D
Overall dimensions when aligned: 72" H × 64" W × 1" D
🔹 Condition:
Fair condition with moderate surface wear including scratches, scuffs, chips, and finish loss. A 6" section of white paint transfer is present on one edge. Hinges are missing, but panels are structurally solid. Please review images for detail.
